10 Interesting Activities To Promote Attentiveness In An Elementary School Child

To grab the attention of the students throughout the entire length of the teaching period is a big challenge being put up in front of every teacher. On the other hand it's equally challenging for students too to concentrate over what the teacher is teaching. There are many factors that affect the attention of a student during the teaching learning process which varies from learner to learner.

Becoming restless during the lecture, feeling sleepy and dozing off when the teacher is teaching, feeling hungry, scribbling some design in the book, tapping on the desk with a pen or pencil are very common behaviour being observed by the teacher. The only way to avoid this behavior is just by including certain interesting and engaging activities before, during and after the lesson. The teacher has to take certain extra efforts to cater to the needs of every student by engaging the students in the following activities which will definitely boost the attention span and make the lesson interesting for the students.

  1. Shake Up Your Body

The teacher can conduct certain simple physical exercises accompanied by music or create music with the snapping of the fingers, clapping of the palms, stomping of the feets, humming of the mouth. The activity is a great cheer up moment for the students as they enjoy creating and playing music.

  1. Spot The Word

The teacher can initiate a game wherein she can ask the students to identify the word in the passage which means so and so. This kind of activity develops critical thinking skills and enriches vocabulary knowledge of a student.

  1. Random Reading

The teacher can ask any student randomly to read any particular line from a specific passage. Eg: Paragraph no. 3, Line no. 5 to 7 etc. Such kind of activity develops the habit of alertness in the student so that they remain attentive throughout the lecture.

  1. Say A Rhyme/Song

The teacher can start the class (or in the middle of the class) with a rhyme or song with actions suitable for that subject or chapter in order to grab the attention of the students and make them feel more energetic and enthusiastic to know more in details about a particular chapter and encourage them to be attentive till the end of the lecture.

  1. Count Backwards

Counting can be really fun especially when it is done backwards and in the form of a game. The teacher can initiate a group game wherein the students can be selected randomly and said to count the numbers backwards such that all the members of the group gets equal chance to count the numbers backwards. The group with least errors or mistakes can be declared the winner.

  1. Meditate For A While

Meditation yoga for a while before or between the lecture can be very useful for difficult subjects or challenging concepts. The teacher can make the student sit and demonstrate some yoga to boost concentration and attention power. By doing this the students feel very relaxed and regain energy to start their day afresh.

  1. Draw / Color A Image

Drawing a science diagram and colouring it using different colors can add vibrancy and change students' mood to learn better and faster. Instead of just having a monotonous lecture wherein only the teacher draws the diagram and does the explanation and then tells the students to do a particular diagram as homework, Isn't it better to let them draw along with you and enjoy the flow of the lesson. By doing this they will learn to draw in perfect symmetry and dimension.

  1. Revise The Tables

Multiplication Tables is the greatest enemy of a Primary or Elementary School child. Most of the students just want to run away from the tables or escape the table test for some or the other reasons. But if it's done in the right way, using music or smart tricks it will be the most fun and enjoyable act for a student.

  1. Jump Out Of Classroom

Classrooms can be really boring at some times and hence many students fail to pay attention to the teacher while she is teaching. But if we take these students outside the classroom, maybe to a garden or a laboratory or an activity room or a school club, it can greatly increase the attention span of every student and help in proper retention of the learnt concepts.

  1. Make A Sound

Just to add the fun factor while teaching, the teacher can make different sounds of any animals, birds or things and ask the students to identify those animals, birds or things which make  that sound. The students will definitely find these activities refreshing one.

So, wasn't it interesting to know the simple ways to make your class more energetic and engaging from the beginning till the end. Start implementing these simple activities and see the changes it brings in the academic and extracurricular among the students.

Implement the most suitable activities in your lesson plan and make your every lesson a memorable one for your beloved students.
